The activated carbon production from coconut shell with chemical and physical process has been done. This research was investigated the effect of soaking concentration of ammonium bicarbonate as the activator to the characteristics of product. It was also to study the application of activated carbon as an adsorbent in virgin coconut oil purification.
Activated carbon was produced by pirolysis of coconut shell for 6 hours at temperature of 400 °C and then activated by the chemical and physical processes. Chemical activation was done by using ammonium bicarbonate solution at concentration variation i.e. 0.5 %, 1 %, 1.5 %, 2 % and 2.5 % respectively for 24 hours. Physical activation is done in thermal reactor for 2 hours at maximum temperature of 800°C. This activated carbon was used to application step with the soaking process of activated carbon into virgin coconut oil.
The best quality of activated carbon was obtain from activated carbon with 2.5 % concentration of ammonium Bicarbonate. At this condition could be produced activated carbon with 56,06 % of yield with characteristics i.e. 1.95 % moisture content, 17.7 % volatile matter, 3.18 % ash content, 79.12 % fixed carbon and adsorptive capacity of iodium is 304.8845 mg/g. This adsorptive capacity fulfil the Industrial Standard of Indonesia 0258-79. The best quality of virgin coconut oil is obtained from virgin coconut oil which soaked with activated carbon at 2.5 % concentration of activator. That virgin coconut oil have 1 meq/kg of peroxide value and 1.01 NTU of turbidity.
